The MTCM is designed to help adults to prepare themselves for working with young children. The center has a practice environment set up to emulate a Montessori classroom. In the practice room, students work with the materials that are used with the children. Dr. Montessori refers to the Montessori classroom as the “prepared environment” or “Children’s House.” She states, “The first aim of the prepared environment is to render the growing child independent of the adult. It is a place where he can do things for himself - live his own life - without the immediate help of adults.” All the conditions necessary to support optimal development should be present within the environment. Students will learn how to create an environment suited to the physical, intellectual and psychological needs of the developing child.
